Convert images between JPG, PNG and WebP

Change an image's format properly, by decoding and re-encoding its pixels, not just renaming the file. Use JPG for photos, PNG for graphics with sharp edges or transparency, and WebP for small files on the web.

Questions

Is renaming .png to .jpg the same?

No. That only changes the name. We genuinely re-encode the image.

Which format is smallest?

Usually WebP, then JPG. PNG is largest for photos.

Is quality lost?

JPG and WebP are lossy; at 90% quality differences are hard to see. PNG is lossless.
